A new DVD is out, Fitzcarraldo. Read the Review at my favorite movie review site. Should be a must see! It sports Klaus Kinski, Werer Herzog, Claudia Cardinale and strange story with strange circumstances and not Mick Jagger.

geek ~ Morales legt Grundstein für Koka-Industrie

Juni 20, 2006

geek ~ What font to use?

Mai 16, 2006

While writing my project documentation I realised that I have to choose a font for my portfolio, but don't know anything bout fonts. I am working with OpenOffice on my Win2k Box here at work -_-; The problem ist that there are a lot of M$-only Fonts, which will not render correctly on non M$ supported platforms, which is unbearable. So, where are the opensource fonts?

The Free Software Foundation has a small list of licenses.

Actually, fonts can't be copyrighted in most countries. On the other hand, who wants to use M$ fonts? There are some lists on the web, but actual info on the subject is not that easy to find or understand.

The few fonts that I could find were kinda unprofessional looking, not very promising, strangely licensed or lack features like italics or serifs.

There's one font that cought my attention, Gentium (Latin: belonging to all the nations), OpenFont licensed, defining roughly 1,500 glyphs and has a really nice face!

The umbrella organisation SIL International is a worldwide non-profit organization whose main purpose is to study, develop and document lesser-known languages in order to expand linguistic knowledge, promote literacy and aid minority language development. Great! Unfortunately, SIL has been accused of being involved in moving indigenous populations in South America from their native lands to make way for exploitation schemes of North American and European oil corporations. Their religious backgroud and missionary activities are also questionable. Well, this has nothing to do with Gentium, after being released as opensource. Anyway, it won't scale well below 14 pix yet, so after testing I had to go for another alternative.

The alternative is now the Gnome Bitstream Vera Fontfamily. I couldn't find any negative Press about the Bitstream company, and I guess I can trust the choices of the respected Gnome foundation. Looking great too!

If you have more info on this peculiar subject, I would be very interested to hear about it.
